Hub Meeting 24th March, Aylesford School
RE Hub Alert! Following recent discussions on both this group and the ‘other one!’ we are going to meet as a networking group on Saturday 18th November! I know this is very late notice but hopefully some of you will be able to make it along even if only for some of the time. We have a central location – Aylesford School – which is just off the M20 at junction 5 so very easy to get to. We will make a soft start at 10am and aim to finish around 1pm.
The morning will as always include plenty of pastries to bolster our discussions and will cover:
– A whole group discussion following on from one on the ‘other group’ around Direct Instruction, its uses and proponents (Katie Clemmey and Lauren Smillie)
– An exploration of equality and gender in RE and how we might creatively address this in our classes (Hannah Jayne and Alexis Stones)
– Split session: A TeachMeet as an open group OR a GCSE moderation for those who have expressed an interest
As always this is as much about getting a chance to meet each other as to share practice but hopefully the sessions above look interesting. If you’d like to come along can you comment in the thread here so that we have an idea of numbers for catering.
Also – if you are Primary and would like a session can you suggest something specific you’d like to see and I will do my best to organise something otherwise the first 2 plus the TeachMeet will be the default Primary choices.

I am adding a bit more detail.
Part 1: A focus on key issues around working better with texts as sources, introduced by Bob – some big ideas for thinking about how pupils can engage texts.
Part 2: Split into primary and secondary groups
Primary Groups with Rebecca Swansbury: This will look at some techniques to improve contextual readings of sources. What is context? What does it look like in examples around the Bible? These will include some easy ideas to develop deeper engagements with sources in upper primary
Secondary Group with Bob Bowie: This will look specifically at how texts can be read and interpreted in ways that reveal the different ways Christians engage with texts. We’ll look at some common texts that can be applied to many GCSE topics areas.
These sessions seek to help you develop deeper uses of sources and smarter techniques. This is related to a major research development initiative to try to help students better engage texts, finding ways round the ‘proof text’ practice. The initiative is also aimed at unlocking deeper answers, getting beyond the for/against template answer. So we ‘ll be looking at smarter uses of sacred texts in learning about and from religion. How to turn your pupils in textual investigators! There will also be a focus on links with literacy at primary level.
Part 3: Finally, there is some local news and our standing Teach Meet item so please bring something to share.

Professor Berry Billingsley
Equipped with a degree in physics, Berry’s first career was with the BBC creating
science stories for Tomorrow’s World, Blue Peter and Science in Action. This prompted what has become a lifetime interest in the impacts of science communication and education on how people think about the relationships between science and religion. The LASAR (Learning about Science and Religion) Research Project was set up in 2009, led by the University of Reading in collaboration with the Faraday Institute for Science and Religion. LASAR’s new home is Canterbury Christ Church University where

Berry will speak about her work in developing practical strategies for supporting children in thinking about the Big Questions which arise when children encounter the intersection between science and religion.
Dr Beth Green
Beth is a UK citizen now based near Toronto in Canada, where she is Program Director for
Education at Cardus (https://www.cardus.ca/research/ education) a social policy think tank dedicated to the renewal of social architecture in North America. She previously directed the National Centre for Christian Education at Liverpool Hope University, where she also ran the Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD). Beth has an international reputation for her expertise in religious school ethos; leadership and management; teaching and learning and social theory in education. She is a good friend of NICER and played a leading role in the research that resulted in the recently published book
Christian Faith in English Church Schools: Research Conversation with Classroom Teachers (Peter Lang, 2016).
Beth will speak about the major survey of graduates from North American Christian schools for which she is responsible. This work is unique in the world and generates insights of international relevance.

For our hub event this term we are doing something a little different and joining a special event focussed around alternative spiritualities, the focus of one of our MAs.
